Eastern France: 1st Region for Renewable Energy Consumption in Metropolitan France

Eastern France – A Leading Region for the Consumption of Green Electricity

In March 2025, Observ’ER, the Observatory of Renewable Energies, published its 2024 Barometer of Renewable Electricity in France. The Grand Est region has emerged as the leading French region in terms of covering regional electricity consumption with renewable energies. It is the first time that a metropolitan region has exceeded the 50% threshold on this indicator!

The Most Self-Sufficient Region in Renewable Electricity in Metropolitan France

51.3%. This is the share of electricity consumption in the Grand Est region that was covered by renewable energies in 2024. This makes it the most self-sufficient region in metropolitan France, well above the national average of 29.9%.

This ranking is mainly due to the presence of three active nuclear power plants (Chooz, Nogent-sur-Seine, Cattenom). They account for 21.8% of French nuclear electricity production, making the Grand Est the second-largest nuclear production region in France and a major exporter. The Grand Est region produces more than twice what it consumes, exporting to other French regions and abroad, particularly to Germany.

A Region Massively Investing in Green Energies and Continuing the Path

Renewable energy production in the Grand Est is not solely reliant on nuclear power. For several years, the region has been investing in renewable energies with the goal of becoming a positive energy and low-carbon region by 2030.

In this regard, it can count on numerous assets. It is already the second-largest region in France for wind power, in terms of capacity and production; the leading region in France for biogas in installed capacity, electricity production, and biomethane injection; and the leading producer of biofuels in France. 13% of France’s renewable energy production comes from the Grand Est.

In 2025, the Grand Est region continues its commitment and leverages its strong development potential. It is the leading region in France for geothermal development thanks to the presence of various types of deposits, and it has one of the largest hydrogen basins in Europe. This is our the Region Grand Est pursues its ambition to remain a leading region in France in terms of Energy Transition.
