The latest generation of the Supercomputer ROMEO inaugurated
At the end of May 2025, the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA) inaugurated its latest generation supercomputer, ROMEO, a powerful and eco-efficient tool, available to students, researchers, and businesses.
ROMEO : A powerful and eco-efficient supercomputer
“By equipping our university with one of the most powerful and greenest supercomputers in the world, we affirm a dual ambition: to support the research of tomorrow and to contribute to responsible innovation,” said Christophe Clément, President of URCA, during the inauguration of the ROMEO supercomputer.
In recent years, ROMEO has increased its computing activity by 20 times. Its computing power of 9.863 petaflops (PFlop/s) allows it to perform 10 million billion operations per second. CombiningHigh-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence, the new version of ROMEO is the leading university computing power in France.
But ROMEO is not just a powerful supercomputer. It is also eco-efficient. Since 2018, the improvements made on the supercomputer ROMEO could help divide its energy consumption by 4, making it the world’s number 2 and France’s number 1 for eco-efficiency (Green500).

A Supercomputer adapted to many domains and applications
According to Arnaud Renard, the ROMEO Regional Computing Center is “the largest machine for artificial intelligence in France accessible to researchers, businesses, and students.” Indeed, the supercomputer is currently used for 250 research projects, and agreements have already been concluded with companies based in Eastern France, so these can benefit from this cutting-edge tool.
ROMEO provides industries and researchers in the Eastern France with high-performance computing resources, secure storage spaces, and adapted software. The Regional Computing Center (“Centre de Calcul Régional”) also offers support in using these tools and expertise in advanced scientific and technical fields such as high-performance computing, applied mathematics, physics, biophysics, and chemistry.

At the present time, ROMEO is involved in many sectors and “covers all the disciplinary fields of the University of Reims. It is a machine that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” The supercomputer is specifically used in the following domains:
- Health: Identification of molecules
- Environment: modeling pollutant dispersion
- Bioeconomy: sustainable champagne production
- Fundamental Physics: modeling the universe and matter
- Industry: designing digital twins for the automotive sector
A priviledged access for companies based in Eastern France
In addition to its many applications in all the universities of the Grand Est Region, ROMEO supercomputer provides companies with advanced computing capabilities to innovate and improve their competitiveness.
